9 Underrated Link Building Tactics That Can Massively Improve Your SEO [Infographic]

If you’re looking to increase the organic search traffic that your website gets, you’ll definitely want to consider link building.

Link building isn’t an exact science—in fact, the entire process of acquiring backlinks is incredibly diverse—but one thing all link building strategies have in common is the concept of quality over quantity.

While the practice of link building has evolved with time, having large amounts of low-quality backlinks still won’t benefit your website as much as having a few strong backlinks from reputable websites.

Here are a few techniques you can use to earn those all-important links.

Interviews

One of my favourite link building strategies from the infographic above is to interview others for industry-related content.

If you’re familiar with any big-name bloggers or other personalities in your niche, it may be worth reaching out to them about an interview opportunity.

They may be able to share insights on their own strategy that readers would find valuable, and they may even send traffic your way.

Resource pages

The best way to get inbound links is to create content that people want. The best way to create content that people want is to give them great information.

The best way to give them great information is to create quality resource pages, which are pages of helpful tips and information.

These resource pages can include everything from your FAQ page or your knowledge base, to Q&A pages about popular topics, and even multimedia walkthroughs.

Partner links

Reach out to your partners, suppliers, customers and professional associations and see if you can obtain a link from their website. This works particularly well for B2B companies that have been working closely with other businesses for a long time.

It’s also a great way to gain high-quality links as many of these organisations will be very selective about where they link. In fact, they may ask you to write content for them first before granting you permission to use their logo on your site.

HARO

Help a Reporter Out is a place where reporters go to source stories for their articles, and you can submit your responses or be featured in an upcoming publication. It’s absolutely free, too!

There are multiple categories on topics ranging from architecture to entertainment. If you have something great to share with your audience, HARO could be exactly what you need to get it out there.

This service will open up several opportunities, but you will have to be patient while and persistent before responses start rolling in.

Don’t forget to include a link back to your site when responding with any piece of content since journalists will likely visit your website to check out other content listed on your website.

Image reclamation

Image reclamation involves finding images you own on other websites and asking them to credit your work with a link back to your site. It’s an indirect way of building links, but it has helped sites rank well in Google.

While you can do this manually through Google Images, this can be a long drawn out process if you have lots of images, so you’ll need to use a reverse image search tool to make the process easier and operate at scale.

Profile links

Look for sites that allow you to create a company account and include a link to your website. The more niche relevant the better, as quality beats quantity.

There are thousands of online directories to list your site or business on, but not all directories are equal when it comes to adding value with their traffic. Try looking at local directories specific to where you operate your business from.

These can be extremely beneficial in building relevant links back to your site.

Linking out / ego bait

One of my favorite ways to build links is by linking out to others in your industry.

If you write a great piece of content on your site and mention a few other great posts in your industry, many of those sites will likely link back to you.

It’s a simple, effective way to get your name out there and pick up quality links. Of course, it goes without saying that you should only share valuable content on your site—otherwise they won’t want to share with you!

Tier 2 link building

Second tier link building involves building links to pages that link to you, therefore improving the value of that link.

While these types of links may not appear as valuable at first glance, they can boost your credibility and authority in search engines like Google.

As an added bonus, most tier 2 links also tend to be easier and quicker to obtain than top-tier links.

Media events

If you want to get links from news outlets, you need to become a source of news.

A big part of that is arranging media events: If you’re launching something new, host an event and invite journalists and other bloggers to learn more about your product or service and take part in your launch.

You can also find opportunities through PR agencies, which often coordinate with local publications for coverage related to their clients’ news announcements.

As a last resort, consider cold-calling publications—but approach it strategically, so as not to come off as overly desperate.
